School-based traineeship

What is a school–based traineeship?

A school-based traineeship allows students who are interested in business to have practical work experience and have formal training while still studying at school.

The traineeship gives students the opportunity to get a nationally recognised Certificate qualification and to count it toward their SACE.

If you’re a student that enjoys practical hands on learning then this may be a pathway option for you.

How does it work?

Students who undertake a school-based traineeship will:

Enter into a traineeship training contract with an employer. The contract is legally binding and must be signed by a parent or guardian if you are under 18 years of age. In South Australia, Traineeship and Apprenticeship Services (TAS) is responsible for regulating the SA traineeship and apprenticeship system. All traineeship training contracts are approved and managed by TAS. Find out more about TAS at www.employment.sa.gov.au/employ/

You will work at least one day per week in a business organisation;

You will earn a trainee wage for the time you spend working;

You will also do formal off-the-job training in business services at a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).

What are the benefits?

A school-based traineeship has the following benefits:

You are paid to learn;

You get practical experience in a real work environment;

You get credits toward SACE;

It is an alternative pathway to start your career, particularly for those who enjoy learning by doing;

You will end up with a nationally recognised Certificate qualification.

The real work experience you gain will  be invaluable when seeking a permanent  job.
